A pale garnet colour not unlike that of a mature Burgundy or mature, top-end single village Beaujolais. The nose is lovely, delicate, floral. The palate is utterly delicious – soft, dry, with fine, almost ‘crisp’ tannins if you can get your head around that, and delightfully aromatic with notes of hibiscus flowers and fresh raspberries. This is, of course, the grape sometimes called Criolla, one of the oldest known varietals and one which has been growing in South America for more than 500 years. Recently, talented young winemakers on both sides of the Andes have been realizing just how good it can be when taken seriously.
